We redesigned the packaging for pre-made pancakes (poffertjes) in a way that it becomes reusable to increase sustainability and reduce the environmental impact.
Our new packaging design can be folded in half to become a puppet toy which extends the service life of the product by adding a fun factor and the collectable value for children.

Project Overview
Problem
Cérélia Netherlands is the division that produces ready to heat Dutch crêpes and pancake bites (traditional Dutch ‘Poffertjes’) and wants an alternative packaging with an emphasis on re-use. Sustainability and the ‘fun’ element are important themes for them for their brand image.
My role & responsibility
User Researcher
UX and UI designer
Product designer
Goal
The aim of this project is to create a fun, convenient and interactive experience for families with children (from 4 to 12) while still meeting the ecological goals.
Project duration
3 months

Research
We began this project with evaluating the packaging systems that are being used in the market today.
We analyzed step by step on how the experience of packaging is currently like to the end users.
Left is a mood board made to explore other packaging made for children and serves the reusable purposes.

Ideation

We used 'how to' questions as a method of ideation. By answering "how" our goals can be fulfilled, such as "how to" keep the children interested as above, we were able to come up with different ideas.

Conceptulization

We experimented with paper prototypes on different forms and methods. This gave us some understanding of how much storage would be needed or the usage of different shapes. We then evaluated them assessing the parts and the user experience aspects.

After evaluating process, this puppet concept made it to the final selection.
This packaging for poffertjes can be folded in half after use to be made into a shape of a puppet.
The company can offer different types of animals so that it is more enjoyable and collectable for children.

Presentation
I designed the final poster that introduces the product to the clients. It describes which materials and manufacturing method would be used for this concept and explains the reasoning alongside with which added values it can bring to the table.
